Is Your Vehicle in Need of a Wheel Alignment? 3 Signs That It's Time to Head to a Local Repair Shop

Proper wheel alignment plays an important role in the function of your vehicle. For instance, if your wheels are out of alignment, you will often find that you have less fuel efficiency and traction. That is why you should always address the need for an alignment as soon as possible. Learning to identify the warning signs of a bad alignment can help you to accomplish this important goal.

Warning Sign #1: Your Vehicle Drifts to One Side or the Other

One of the most common warning signs that your wheel alignment requires attention is that your vehicle will begin to drift to one side or the other rather than going straight if you take your hands off the wheel for even a second. The more severe your alignment issues are, the more dramatically your vehicle will pull. In the most severe cases, you may even find that your steering wheel is not centered even though you are driving straight. To test the alignment of your wheels, briefly remove your hands from the wheel when driving straight on a smooth road. If the car begins to drift, it is time to head to a local repair shop.

Warning Sign #2: Your Tire Tread Is Wearing Unevenly

Poorly aligned wheels will not make contact with the pavement in an even manner. As a result, you will often find that either the inside or outside edge of your tire treads is wearing out faster than the rest of your tire. In some cases, you may also find that either your front or rear tires are wearing down faster. This typically occurs in situations where only one axle is out of alignment. Before simply replacing your tires, be sure to have your vehicle's alignment checked. A failure to do so will likely result in your new tires also wearing down faster and unevenly.

Warning Sign #3: Your Turning Radius Has Increased

Your wheel alignment is responsible for making sure that all of your tires make contact with the road evenly. If your wheel alignment is off, you will often notice changes in the way your vehicle handles. One of the most noticeable of these changes is an increased turning radius. If you find that you are no longer able to turn your vehicle around in the same amount of space you once did, this is a good indication that it is time to have your wheel alignment checked out at a local repair shop.
